The comprehensively renovated and extended building complex of the Zwickau police headquarters is an important project that comprises a new building for offices and the restoration of two old buildings in keeping with the preservation order. This highly contemporary development, covering over 7,000 square metres of floor space, will provide space for more than 500 police officers in future.
The property consists of two L-shaped building complexes, which enclose an inner courtyard that serves as a car park. A connection was created between the two parts of the building to enable efficient internal organisation. The structure not only accommodates offices, but also forensic laboratories, changing rooms, technical rooms and garages in order to meet the specific requirements of police work.
Dating from 1914 to 1916, the historic main building including the east wing is heritage protected and formerly served as a royal office building. The external appearance has been preserved, while the interior has been extensively adapted to contemporary police usage and current building and fire protection standards.
In the course of the building work in the 1970s, the premises were extended by adding prefabricated extensions, which were fully demolished in the run-up to the current construction projects. The external homogeneity of the new extension building and the renovated old building was achieved through the aluminium façade cladding, which gives the entire complex a contemporary and harmonious appearance.
The planning for this project began in 2018 and included the careful removal and exact reproduction of the sgraffito plaster, both with regard to the texture and the colour tone, taking the heritage preservation requirements into account. Attention was paid to the structure of the sgraffito plaster façade, the shaping of the pillar projections, mirrors and cornices as well as the special finish of the plaster. In addition, ornaments were moulded and recast in order to preserve the historical character of the building.
