This level of energy efficiency was achieved, by airtightness (1.34m³/(hm²) at 50 Pa) in tandem with controlled mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, space & water heating from an air to water electric heat pump, high performance triple glazing, but most importantly by high external thermal fabric specification, of which the Baumit External wall insulation & render system played a very important part. A finished external wall U value of 0.13W/m2K was achieved using 220mm Rigid EPS Insulation (TCC 0.031) which was used to wrap the external solid masonry walls externally, to reduce thermal bridging at all junctions. There is a very pleasant internal environment with a constant internal temperature of 19-21 Deg Celsius regardless of the extremes of external temperatures for such an exposed location.

Materials specified & Low Maintenance;- Part of the client brief was for low maintenance external finishes, that were not prone to weather or lichen staining, hence the Baumit Nanopor Top Fine, self-finished silicone render system was used. Visual Appearance;- A simple palette of materials, Anthracite coloured zinc to pitched roof & wall cladding, sandstone landscape walling & plinths, and white Baumit wall render, all play a significant part in achieving a very simple, sharp, contemporary version of a traditional agricultural ‘barn like ‘ building which sits effortlessly into its rural context, just as the Planning Authority requested.
