The former post office building, which has been vacant since 2006, has been in the possession of the municipality of Frankenberg/Saxony since 2016. This has been extensively and specifically renovated for future use as a youth art school.
Situated at the Friedenspark in the town centre, the property was previously used for several years as a post office.
The façade was reconstructed in keeping with the heritage preservation requirements. Among other things, the old tower, which had been demolished during the Nazi era, was rebuilt.
The existing plaster was completely stripped down to the foundation walls. Furthermore, most of the stucco elements were removed from the façade in advance by a restorer and stucco plasterer, reworked and then refitted as new “old” elements.
The new plaster was rendered with MP69, using EFP01 as the finishing coat, and RK 70 N for the surface of the finely textured areas. This material has a particularly fine surface. It blends in perfectly with the completely new and elaborately crafted embossed areas in the plaster and the finely structured stucco elements.
In addition, all stucco parts such as window surrounds, eave cornices, toothing stone cornices and decorative elements were recreated and integrated into the façade based on historical specifications.
For the interior construction, all the new plaster structures were examined from a building physics, energy and sustainability perspective. For the exterior, the decision was made in favour of a cement-free, thermally insulating, mineral, highly diffusion-open and moisture-regulating lightweight plaster mortar NHL Thermo. The reworking was carried out with MC 55 W basecoat mortar including fabric inlay. This achieves a sufficiently pressure-resistant surface for the daily use of the building by school children and for public events.
