The Villa Brutscher (1896) has been extensively renovated and given a new lease of life with a café.
Starting with the restoration of the stucco elements, which had suffered long-term damage due to leaks in the roof. Both the architectural decorations, which were completely reconstructed, and the large plastered surfaces and clinker bricks were reworked.
The weather played key role in the restoration: especially when it came to the gilding with 100 nanometre thick gold leaf. To apply and polish the ultra-thin gold leaf, the wind had to be absolutely still.
The facing brickwork made of hard clinker also had to be renovated. The plaster surfaces were completely reworked and painted with French ochre to make the vibrant colour of the building stand out from its surroundings. The flanking columns of the entrance area were marbled.
The building contractor and proprietor of the café attached great importance to tradition, which is reflected in and around the building, all in keeping with the heritage preservation requirements.
The restorer and church painter applied to the building contractor by handwritten letter asking for “the honour” of restoring the façade, which greatly impressed him. He was not disappointed. Not only did he find an absolute expert, but a friendship has also developed. The villa - a labour of love for both partners.
