Charming residential atmosphere with historical flair in the Alte Schmiede
The property is an architecturally impressive structure with a historical background which is of relevance to the urban development in Pegau. It is representative of the “Heimatstil and Reformarchitektur” popular around 1910. The two-storey building impresses with its uninterrupted axes, some with mansard or hipped roofs, oriels, dormers, windows and doors as well as the striking Jugendstil ornamentation. The historical significance is emphasised by the preserved inscription “Hufbeschlag. Wagenbau. Ludwig Parche“ (Farriery. Wagon construction. Ludwig Parche). The façade was reconstructed in accordance with heritage protection requirements. The damaged plaster areas were mapped with the result that it was not possible to preserve the plaster substance, which had to be removed. According to the heritage protection requirements, the new plaster was to match the existing historical plaster in terms of texture, binding agent and colouring. A product from the HR area (historical restoration) was chosen. Before applying the finishing coat, the base coat was applied with an additional fabric reinforcement. For the finishing coat from the HR range, a sgraffito texture was chosen to match the existing plaster. Here, one of the challenges for the craftsmen executing the work was to plaster the round structures so that they didn’t look any different to the flat areas. The façade stucco, cartouches and other decorative elements of the façade were secured before the old plaster was removed and replaced on the new façade after the reconstruction. The stucco elements were mostly recreated to match the texture of the finishing plaster, using a fast-setting casting stucco mortar for moulded parts. The base design is also a special feature: the original structure of the plaster cassettes was retained here, in what is known as rustication. The surface was finished using an old historical trowelling technique. To ensure that the special and elaborate plastering technique lasts for a long time, the base plasters in the base area were treated with Sanova restoration plasters in order to react to salts that could damage the building. The internal construction is also worth mentioning. All of the plaster structures were examined from a historical, building physics and sustainability perspective. In areas with high levels of salts which are harmful to the building, Sanova restoration plasters were used. All the other wall surfaces were plastered with the universally applicable Baumit KP 37 lime machine plaster for a healthy indoor environment.
